Crete Cutie

What I did on my holidays, by Christina McMc aged 34 3/4

I desperately needed a holiday so I packed my bags, grabbed Mr. McMc and headed to Crete for a week. I swam in the sea, I sunbathed on the beach, I read many many awesome books while sitting on a balcony in my bikini, drinking icy cold beer and stuffing my face with crisps (which goes some way towards explaining the interesting pattern of suntan/sunburn on my body.) I made friends with a wide variety of cats, ate many delicious things and drank far too much Raki. It was utterly blissful and I was left with a golden glow (and a serious bout of Raki-induced indigestion) which is only just beginning to fade.

One of my favourite elements of being on holiday is dressing up to go to dinner. Even if I’m just going to a kebab shop at the end of the road, I’ll have great fun in rummaging through my suitcase attempting to find the most appropriate outfit. I wore this gorgeous ruffled New Look jumpsuit out for a walk along the beach, followed by drinking cocktails while watching Scotland win the football and a plate of utterly divine stuffed courgette flowers.

I’ve got a few issues with New Look (I often feel as though they don’t treat their plus sized customers with the respect or the fashion forward clothing that they deserve), but it would churlish of me not to give props to this ace jumpsuit. Obnoxiously large ruffles are very much my jam this season and I’ll even forgive the one on this garment for being caught in a gust of wind and repeatedly smacking me in the face while I was just trying to have a walk and get on with my business. On the plus side, it did allow me to conveniently and discreetly blot my lipstick. So it’s not all bad.

Speaking of make-up, I tried to keep it simple while I was away mainly because I was terrified of it all sweating off my face in one huge oil slick. Most nights, I went out looking like this. A swish of NARs’s Sugarland on the eyelids, a smudge of Charlotte Tilbury’s Velvet Underground on the lips and a swoop of Pat McGrath highlighter on the cheeks. Followed by the most important product of all, a huge spray of Urban Decay’s All Nighter setting spray. Well, I was on holiday after all.

A Shift of Opinion

As I mentioned in my last post, I went to Barcelona for my wedding anniversary last week. Barcelona has quickly become one of my favourite European cities, mainly because it contains a beach, glorious architecture, incredible art, stunning food and Gin & Tonics as large as a small child’s head. I’ve not had the easiest year for a number of reasons, but on Saturday night I sat in a Absinthe bar which looked like something Hemmingway would have passed out in, laughing at stupid jokes with Mr. McMc and felt a perfect happiness, the likes of which I haven’t felt in a long time. I’m already planning my return trip.

Unsurprisingly, I also wore some really good outfits. Like this simple shift dress from New Look.

2016 has been the year where I break arbitrary fat girl fashion rules (e.g. ‘don’t get your arms out!’ and ‘always cinch your waist!’) and while this shift dress may look simple, it packs a real punch in the looks department. It’s so simple that you can dress it up or down any way you like. I decided to keep it simple(ish), pairing it with some metallic accessories and a killer red lipstick. Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to get any pictures of its lovely cut out back design, which gives it a bit more pizazz than your average plain back shift dress.

ASOS shoes don’t have the best reputation in my house, owing to the fact that I do so much walking (and have such heavy feet) that I tend to wear through them in record time. I’m actually shocked that these flat sandals held up as well as they did seeing that we were walking around eight miles a day – albeit with the occasional beer and tapas break.

Barcelona - Sephora Red

I also discovered that Spain has branches of Sephora, which I was drawn to like a moth is drawn to a flame (coloured lipstick). I only meant to buy some hand wash, but came out with a hand wash, three TonyMoly face masks, a Marc Jacobs eyeliner and this incredible ‘always red’ Cream Lip Stain which does not come off. In the interests of beauty blogger ‘research’, I tested its resilience with kissing, boozing and eating and it barely flaked. Once again, I am cursing the fact that we no longer have Sephora’s in the UK. Although saying that, it’s probably a good thing, as if we did there’s a strong likelihood I’d end up bankrupt.

I felt like a change

September makes me itchy. Perhaps it’s the changing of the seasons. Perhaps it’s because there’s a whole ‘back to school’ vibe in the air. Whatever it is, whenever it rolls around, I feel an intense desire to change my look. Usually, I just buy a new coat or a stupid pair of shoes. But this year, I felt like doing something a bit more dramatic. Last week, I traveled to Leeds and got a giant, intimidating, tiger lady tattooed on me. And this weekend, a very nice man from Hull (who kept shouting ‘OMG YOU’RE SO CUTE, I’M GONNA MAKE YOU LOOK SO CUTE’) cut my hair even shorter and dyed it dark brown.

What better way to celebrate this new and improved version of Christina McMc than by taking some outfit selfies in Liverpool’s premier talking toilet?*

Talkie Toilet

I’m not a big wearer of pencil skirts, but I love this one. It’s super comfy, super stretchy and the most perfect colour – a proper Autumnal mustard. Pairing it with a simple black top and my trusty spiked leather jacket made me feel like a chubby bad-ass bee. Let’s also take a moment to appreciate these amazing cats-eye sunglasses I nabbed from ASOS for the low low price of £3.50.

Brunette

So far, the best part of being a box fresh brunette is seeing how my eyes stand out against my new hair colour. Even more so when I wear dark lipsticks, like NARS’s gorgeous Audacious in Charlotte.

A quick note about these earrings. Every time I wear them, people ask me where I bought them. Through a stroke of good luck, I found them in the sale at Topshop in Liverpool a few weeks ago. I’ve not seen them anywhere else since then (or on their website), leaving me to believe that they were an 80s inspired delight created just for me. If you’re desperate for your own pair, I’ve seen Black Heart Creatives make similar items, and I can’t recommend them enough for cute, unique pieces of jewellery.
