Luxury Witch

Recently, I attended a job interview where I found myself explaining the concept of a ‘Luxury Witch’ to a rather bemused interview panel. ‘Imagine a really well dressed Goth who takes Ubers everywhere,’ I exclaimed before informing them that crushed velvet and pleated skirts were really in this season. They’re yet to let me know if I’ve been offered the job.

Whatever happens with my employment prospects, I’m deeply happy to have introduced the concept of ‘Luxury Witch’ to a wider audience. And – if this term ever appears in the Oxford English Dictionary – you’d probably find a picture of this outfit underneath it.

My love of Marks and Spencer’s clothing runs deep – I will go to my grave arguing that they make the comfiest underwear on the market – and they are really knocking it out of the park this season. Their stuff is chic, reasonably priced and doesn’t fall apart after a few rounds in the washing machine (handy when you spill as much down yourself as I do). They do great everyday basics and on trend pieces like this gloriously witchy metallic midi skirt and leopard print coat, both of which look far more luxurious than their price tags would lead you to believe. Plus, M&S remains the only shop I can pop into during my lunch hour where I can purchase moisturiser, a skirt and a sandwich at the same time. What a time to be alive.

In the spirit of Halloween, I opted to experiment with my eye make-up and try out a more dramatic look. I used Make Up Revolution’s ‘Fortune Favours The Brave’ palette (an absolute bargain at £9.99) to recreate this gorgeous rose gold smokey eye look. I’m a bit of a novice when it comes to eyeshadow, but this is such a lovely (and easy!) tutorial to follow. While it’s not quite as elegant as Nancy’s,  I’m super pleased about how well it turned out.

I completed the look with MAC’s ‘Roxo‘, a limited edition blood red lipstick. While this particular shade is sold out on their website, I’m fairly sure that you could find lots of lovely dupes without searching too hard.

Galentines

I spent last weekend in London hanging out in old haunts, spending too much money in Monki and having a rather debauched time. Saturday also happened to be Galentine’s Day which I spent in the company of some amazing women. We drank tea, we ate dumplings and steak and ran around Liberty’s trying on some ridiculous sunglasses. It reminded me of just how much  I appreciate the fantastic femmes in my life, and how lucky I am to be blessed with such a remarkable group of friends.

Knowing that I was going to be spending the day running around London with a belly full of booze, I wanted to wear something comfortable yet chic and this ASOS shirt dress did the job admirably. It’s cotton which makes it super soft and snuggly – something which is very much appreciated when your arms contain both eczema and a new tattoo.

I desperately wanted to buy this shirt dress in black, but – alas – it wasn’t to be. It’s a minor miracle that I managed to go a whole day without dumping coffee down the front of it. Knowing my (lack of) motor skills, this will probably be the only time I get to say that.

This was also a weekend where I really really appreciated my Dr. Martens. They are the comfiest shoes I’ve ever worn and worth every penny, particularly when you’re heading off on long walks. As much as I would love to spend my days striding around in heels, I am old and my feet get tired much sooner than I’d like them too. Therefore, I will always appreciate shoes which combine style and comfort.

Dream Phone

I have been longing for this Tatty Devine dream phone necklace for months so when I saw it was reduced in the January Sales I was in there like a shot. It is an utterly fantastic piece of jewellery – cute, clever and unique. Sadly, it’s out of stock now but I totally recommend heading over to their website and seeing all the other incredible pieces they have there!

Dream Coat

Winter coats. They are my weakness, they are my joy. I’ve had to put a ban on myself buying any more after I stuck too many of them on a cupboard door in my house and buggered the joint. But plus sized brands have played a blinder this year with their coat options, a birthday discount code from ASOS appeared in my inbox and well…you can guess what happened next.

Dream Coat 1

COAT: ASOS Curve

SHOES: Doc Martens

I’ve had my eye on this ASOS Curve coat for months and was thrilled when it arrived and turned out to be even better than I hoped. It’s warm, the length is perfect, it’s great to snuggle into when your train to work is delayed (a frequent occurrence in my life) and it makes a fantastic prop for selfies. Case in point.

Not only do I look smoking hot and cozy, I also look like I’m wearing a giant Tudor-esque ruff. I think we can all agree that this is a strong look.

This coat also bears a striking resemblance to one I loved and lost when I was a teenager who was obsessed with dressing like a member of Kenickie. While I may have lost the terrible fringe, the desire to coat myself in layers of glitter and hilariously serious expression I was fond of wearing back then, my love of ridiculous fake fur collars will never fade.

There’s 20% off all items on ASOS until Tuesday if you use the code CYBER. If you’re looking for a Winter coat, I could think of few better ways to spend your pennies than on this beauty.

navabi Curvy Blog Award 2015

In another fun piece of news, this blog has been nominated for an award! I’m in the running for one of the navabi Curvy Blog Awards. I’d say it’s a honour just to be nominated (and I wouldn’t be lying), but it would be even nicer to win. If you love reading this blog as much as I love writing it, it would be really great to get your vote. You can vote for me over at their website where I’m number 007.

Let’s talk coats

Five coats I love

The Autumn equinox has been and gone, so it’s safe to say that we’re now in coat season. This is no bad thing, because coats are awesome. There are few greater pleasures than snuggling down into a warm coat on a cold day. I see them as being the final element of a really good outfit – that killer piece that can turn an ensemble from meh to wow.

As you can probably tell, I own a lot of coats. So many in fact, that I had to get the door I was hanging them on rehung because their combined weight had caused it to come off its hinges. I should probably keep my joiner (and my bank) on speed dial considering that I’ve seen many more beautiful coats this season that I can’t wait to get my chubby little hands on. Here are five of my favourites.

ASOS Curve Midi Coat with Faux Fur Collar

ASOS CURVE Midi Coat with Faux Fur Collar – £100

I was a teenager in the late 1990s, and spent most of that period swathed in fake fur and glitter. So, naturally, I love this coat. It looks like something my 15 year old self would throw on before heading out to a Suede gig. ASOS are masters of rich, red Autumnal tones and the colour of this is absolutely divine. And then, there’s that collar. It’s so unapologetically, obnoxiously huge. To paraphrase Mean Girls, I bet it’s full of secrets.

M&S Double Face Unstructured Coat with Wool

Marks & Spencer Double Face Unstructured Coat with Wool – £69.00

Marks and Spencer are absolutely killing it this season. I went into their Manchester branch recently with my sister, and we spent an alarming amount of time running around squealing at all the beautiful items on their shelves. One of the stand out pieces was this duster coat. I’m always slightly wary of duster coats. They look so good on other people, but they always hang oddly on my body and make me look bulky. However, I bought this little number the other day, and it’s fantastic. It’s incredibly elegant and – best of all for a pack horse like me – has really deep pockets for you to keep all your crap in. It’s the perfect thing to wear to work, as it goes so well over a simple, neutral outfit.

Marina Rinaldi Short Checkered Wool Blend Coat

Persona by Marina Rinaldi Short Checkered Wool Blend Coat – £298.00

I need someone to give me lots of money so I can buy this. I mean, look at it. It is such a good shape, and you just know that wearing it is going to be incredibly comforting. It’s a proper business bitch coat, a piece to wear when you’re striding through the city looking and feeling like your best self. Best of all, you can dress it up or down – I’d imagine that it looks just as good worn with a pair of jeans as it would with a pencil skirt and roll neck (my Autumn/Winter 2015 uniform.)

Simple Be Padded Fur Trim Hooded Coat

Simply Be Padded Fur Trim Hooded Coat – £55.00

I’ve been really disappointed by coats I’ve bought from Simply Be in the past, but I may give them a second chance for this one. It’s a little more casual than the kind of thing I’d usually wear, but that’s no bad thing. I can imagine throwing it on before going for a long walk on the beach near my house, or when I just want something to wear with some jeans and a massive jumper. And we all need a fur trimmed hood to hide in when life gets on top of us.

Studio 8 Nicole Mac

Studio 8 Nicole Mac – £135.00

I fell in love with this coat when I saw Bethany wearing it. I’ve been looking for the perfect mac for ages, and this fits the bill. It is just so chic. I’ve found a lot of mackintoshes difficult to wear, as when I do them up, they give me the dreaded ‘shelf tit’ effect. However, this one appears to have been designed with busty girls like myself in mind. Unfortunately though, it only comes in white which is a bit of a nightmare for someone like me who just delights in tipping food/coffee/croissant crumbs down herself.
